December 02, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® December 2014 Fly-In - Cold! For some places in the world the weather is warming up and spring is slowly starting to break free of winter?s grasp, if you live in the southern hemisphere. For those of us in the northern hemisphere winter is on its way. Already here in some places like Buffalo NY, it has seen 6+ feet of snow over a period of 3 days.

This month, we are flying to the coldest airport in the world. Yakutsk Airport in Russia will allow you to experience what could be one of the chilliest travel hubs on the planet as the city is regarded as the coldest in the world. With the average temperature in January standing at around -39C (-38F). What makes this airport even stranger with its cold temperatures, is the airport isn?t high up in the mountains. It sits at only 275 feet above sea level. More

September 01, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® September 2014 Fly-In - Equipment Delivery In August, 1949, Joey Smallwood, Premier of Newfoundland, had the opportunity to see Churchill Falls for the first time and it became his obsession to develop the hydroelectric potential of the falls. After years of planning, the project was officially started on July 17, 1967.

This month we are adding a bit of a twist as the event is not only a fly-in, it?s got a challenge feeling as well. The power station is getting ready for fall maintenance work now that the hot summer weather has passed and electricity demand is at its lowest point of the year. July 07, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® July 2014 Fly-In - Isle of Man The International Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) Race is a motorcycle racing event held on the Isle of Man that was for many years the most prestigious motorcycle race in the world. The event was part of the FIM Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship during the period 1949?1976 before being transferred to the United Kingdom after safety concerns.

Today the Isle of Man TT fuelled by Monster Energy is the most demanding road race in World. Run on a 37 mile public road course in a time trial format. No other motorcycle race is held on such a challenging track. A Mountain Course with its seemingly never-ending series of bends, bumps, jumps, stone walls, manhole covers and telegraph poles, makes for an exciting race and very deadly as well. Average lap speeds of 130mph+ have been common over the last 10 years. In 2010 an electric version of the event called the Zero TT was add, showing electric motorcycles can compete at this level, averaging speeds of almost 120mph.

This month as we travel from the world?s longest closed course race track the 28km 187 turn Nürburgring in Germany to the world?s longest road course race track (that is closed off to public access during the event) on the Isle of Man. More

June 07, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® June 2014 Fly-In - Summer Solstice Summer is here. For those of us in the south, we have been enjoying the warm weather for a few weeks now. Cottages are open, boats are in the water, and motorcycles are filling the road ways. However, the day still ends sometime between 8:30 & 9:00pm when the sun finally sets below the horizon.

This isn?t the case for everyone. Canada?s Northern Territories and Alaska, the first day of summer is the peak of all day sunlight as the sun never sets in some places. Wouldn?t it be great to go golfing at 1:00am with the sun still high in the sky?

This month we celebrate the peak of 24 hour sunlight in the north with a trip to Ketchikan Alaska on the Summer Solstice. More

May 02, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® May 2014 Challenge - Haleakala Observatory This month we continue our sightseeing adventures in the mountains of the Hawaiian Islands. Departing from where we left off last month at Kona Intl (PHKO), you will stay on the Island of Hawaii, The Big Island for a flyby of the Mauna Kea Observatories, before heading to the Island of Maui, where we will see the Haleakala Observatory & land at Kahului Airport (PHOG).

The Mauna Kea group of Observatories is located at an interesting place, almost 14,000 feet above sea level. Putting it above one third of the Earth's atmosphere, giving it excellent astronomical seeing conditions. What makes it more interesting is the way people come and go. Because it?s above 8000 feet, you just can?t simply drive up the mountain side to it as you would most observatories. The summit of Mauna Kea is so high that tourists are advised to stop at the visitor station for at least 30 minutes to acclimate to atmospheric conditions before continuing to the summit, and scientists often stay at Hale Pohaku for 8 hours or more before spending a full night at observatories on the summit, with some telescopes requiring observers to spend one full night at Hale Pohaku before working at the summit. April 27, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® May 2014 Fly-In - Mount St.Helens On May 18th, 1980 at 8:32pst, Mount St. Helens after 2 months of increased seismic activity, catastrophically erupted. The eruption triggered an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale causing the North face to collapse into the Columbia River basin and reducing the mountain?s summit elevation from 9,677 ft to 8,365 ft.

By 17:30pst that evening after more than 9 hours of a vigorous plume of ash, reaching 16 miles above seas level, the ash column began to decline. On that day 34 years ago this month, Mount St. Helens released 24 megatons of thermal energy, 1.5 tons of sulfur dioxide and 2.8 cubic kilometers of debris. Sadly the event also killed 57 people, and nearly 7000 big game animals from the mountain area. More

April 06, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® April 2014 Fly-In - Concorde On April 10th 1976, Air France made its first commercial passenger flight with Concorde. That first flight took passengers from Paris to Rio via the Azores which later changing to Dakar. The stop in the Azores was needed so that Concorde could refuel. The aircraft used an astonishing 2 tons of fuel just to taxi to the runway (2% of its total fuel load) in Paris. Normal operations called for the two inboard engines to be shut down as the aircraft exited the runway after landing, to help save on fuel cost. In 2003 BA and Air France both announced they would stop flying the Concorde after 27 years of service. Lots of reason still float around today as to why it was retired. But truth be told, it was simply due to cost. The Concorde was able to achieve a fuel rating of 15.8pm/g, which means the energy in one gallon of fuel would move one passenger 15.6 miles. Where a 747 has a 46.4pm/g fuel rating. So it?s easy to see, it cost a lot less flying a 747 than a Concorde, sure it?s at a third of the speed, but you?re carrying 4½ times the passengers. More

April 01, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® April 2014 Challenge - Easter Egg Hunt This month is about FlightSim Easter Eggs. What is an FS Easter Egg you might ask? Easter Eggs in the computer software world are little hidden secrets developers write in to their software to give you a little shock and surprise should you find them. Easter Eggs have been in FlightSim since the early days back as far as FS4. Where the Prudential sign on One Prudential Plaza in downtown Chicago, would light up as the sun set. FS2000 added more Easter Eggs, like the tethered weather blimp 14,000 feet above the Florida Keys. Some of these Easter Eggs are very time specific, where others can be seen at any time.

For this month?s challenge we are going back in time, back to 1983 to see the Kilauea volcano eruption. The volcano is still erupting today, but the main eruption happened on January 3, 1983. So the FlightSim Easter Egg only shows up in 1983. More

March 01, 2014 - Canadian Xpress® March 2014 Challenge - Diamonds Are Forever The Canadian North produces some of the finest diamonds in the world. Working underground and in the Canadian North can be very problematic for personal and equipment. The diamond mines of the North are only accessible by ice road during the winter months. During this short 10 week period, hundreds of trucks pull thousands of tons of equipment out to these remote locations. However it?s still a year round operation, so in the months when there is no ice road, the only way to get in to these mines is by air.

The ice roads are gone but there is still a lot of small equipment that needs to be moved. More
